Albania Rejects Asylum Agreement with the UK, Preferring to Welcome Migrants from Italy

Albania dealt a significant blow to the United Kingdom by refusing to sign an asylum agreement, choosing instead to host migrants relocated from Italy. The British government had sought to strike a deal with Albania to send immigrants and process their asylum claims on-site, but Albanian authorities opted to welcome migrants from Italy, according to government sources cited by The Telegraph.

Discussions on this plan had begun earlier in the year but came to a halt after the British Foreign Office and the London Embassy in Tirana indicated that the agreement was a red line for Albania.

The migration agreement between Italy and Albania, signed last November, apparently caught the British Foreign Office off guard, despite the exceptional historical relations between Italy and Albania. According to a source, Albania has delivered a real setback to the UK, causing a delay in the British government s alternative plans as negotiations with other countries are put on hold.

On November 6, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama signed an agreement for the construction of two asylum centers for immigrants in Albania. However, the Constitutional Court of Albania temporarily suspended the ratification of this treaty after a group of opposition parliamentarians raised concerns about its constitutionality.

Meanwhile, the UK has chosen to reactivate its plan to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda after the British Supreme Court previously blocked this measure, deeming it illegal.
